After working at all levels in health care organizations for
over 25 years, I’ve had the pleasure and privilege of
working alongside literally thousands of dedicated professionals
who have made caring for others the focus of their lives’ work.
Through their insights and experiences, I’ve come to
appreciate what is right in health care today … and
what still can be much better.
It is easy to find individual processes that can incrementally
improve patient care: a new care path for a common diagnosis,
a better method for medication administration, a new way to
electronically access test results. But in my work with
frontline professionals, I’ve discovered that all of
these tactical improvements pale in comparison to the need
to improve some of the most seemingly basic – but critically
important – personal skills: the ability to connect and
communicate effectively with other human beings.
My work in health care showed me at an intellectual level
that communication can be better. But it was my personal experience
with a family member in a hospital’s care that convinced
me at an emotional level that communication must
be better. At Stamp & Chase, our sincere belief
is that improved communication can make the experience in health
care better for everyone – patients, families … and the
dedicated professionals who have devoted their lives to taking
care of them.
